Communism in the Soviet Union

Based on what you've learned about the problems Russia was having prior to and after the Russian Revolution and what Vladimir Lenin and Josef Stalin did to fix those problems, do you think the people of Russia benefitted from Russia becoming Communist? Why or why not?

  1. I think that the majority of the Russians did not benefit from Russia becoming Communist. Although there were some benefits from Communism and other problems beforehand, the results of Communism in Russia were mostly negative. Not only were millions of people killed by the Communists, but there was less food and worse living conditions for most of the population.

  2. Even though many people did not benefit from communist Russia, I think that if they hadn't become communist the outcome for Russia after WWI would have been much worse. Lenin and Stalin gave the people of Russia hope for a better life, and they made a lot of lives better, too. Free education, medical care, and day cares were offered to everyone along with inexpensive housing and public recreation. Everyone in the communist society was considered "equal", which made people happier even if it wasn't entirely true. All in all I think Russia becoming communist was good for the people right after WWI, because it provided an opportunity for everyone to get back on their feet.

  3. I honestly think that communism had nearly no benefits in Russias case. It was rushed, and resulted in accomplishing the opposite of what Stallin was aiming for. A tiny percent of the population controlled the majority of the wealth while the rest remained poor. Perhaps if the Russian people had been weened off of their monarchy way of life, communism whould have worked better. In the end though Stallin did more than harm then help, and wasn't able to pull Russia out of the abyss of oppression and despair they had fallen in.

  4. I think that most of the Russians did not benefit from becoming Communist. However some did. I agree with Gabi about the damages of WWI being greater if they hadn't become Communist, but in reality the communists created a lot of damage too. Even though Russia was a communist country, the way the people ruled everyone else it was more of a Totalitarian rule; Lenin or Stalin at the top, along with their Communist followers, and then the other citizens, who theoretically had equal rights. Many people were killed, and tortured. Some people benefited from the free healthcare, daycare, and education, But in the end Russian citizens were more hurt than helped.

  5. In my opinion, its half in half, if your poor you will get money, but if your rich you will get paid the same as everyonew else. It honestly depends on who you are. But overall i believe communist did more bad for their country than good. The standard of living was still low, and people still starved. Sure there was a few good things like free education, child day care, and inexpensive housing. But when it all comes down to it Russia would be better off without communism.

  6. I think that communism mainly had no benefits on Russia due to the fact every one was equal which is not necessarily a bad thing but no one was unique. Communism might have been a good thing for the poor people because the would get paid money just like very one else, but for the people who where very rich and where getting paid a lot of money it would be the opposite because they would be getting a lot less money. The down side was that the population only had a little bit of the wealth. Also the fact that people could not have there own business to make profit of was defiantly non beneficial. The last major down side of communism is the fact that the communist killed thousands of the population. The few benefits like inexpensive housing and other things like that could not level out all of the down sides of communism. Over all i think communism is not the right path to go down.

  7. I think the people in Russia benefited from Russia becoming communist because during the time of World War one people didnt have enough money. Lenin and Stalin made it so that people had a chance to fullfill their lives with whatever they enjoy doing. They got that oppurtunitie because without paying they were given a chance to learn, a chance to have a great education. Education is important, and helped people figure out what they wanna do with their lives. Lenin and Stalin changed Russia. Free education was offered, free medical care was offerered, inexpensive housing, and public recreation was given. However housing did remain scarce in Russia. Lenin and Stalin did change many things and everything they changed benefited Russia. All of the benefits really help people in Russia. After World War one people happily continuted their lives. Stalin and Lenin had a big impact in peoples lives by creating these benefits for people. Everybody should be thankful that Stalin and Lenin made it so everyone could live happily.

  8. I think that communism was bad for Russia or at the time, the USSR. First of all, the USSR was isolated from the rest of the world and some books were banned, making education a little harder. Therefore, the USSR could not develop economically or industrialize as well as the rest of the world. Second of all, the brutal punishments, which were given to every suspicious person no matter if they were guilty or not, were horrible. The people who were persecuted were severely beaten, sent to concentration camps, or killed. The increased number of deaths and casualties was even worse for the economy. Finally, this government was a model for other dictatorships and totalitarian states to come.

  9. I dont think the people in russia befifted from communism because there was too many people killed in fighting the revolution is russia they would have been better off if they had those people working. If they had alot of working people i dont belive thier economy would have gotten as bad as it did. Even the few benifiets of free education and free child care were not worth the switch to communism.

  10. I do not think Russia got much of a benefit from the reign of Communism. Certain things that are now allowed were not allowed back then (such as following your own beliefs, and not doing whatever the government tells you to). The people of a certain country under power should be free to do what they believe in and not get in trouble for it. Another thing is that the people were severely watched and sabotaged by the secret police or government, who read private letters and hid cameras to catch people they were suspicious of. This is highly wrong, and no one should have to go through something as terrible as this time in history was.

  11. I believe that the people of Russia benefitted from Russia becoming communist, as well as Russia not benefitting from it as well. Russia becoming communist was an attempt at making their lives better, but it did not work completely. Although Russia received free medical care, education, and lower prices on housing, as well as other things, communism did more harm than good. Many people got killed and the secret police invaded their homes. They were ordered to be atheist and their living conditions were harsh. Overall, some people benefitting but the majority of the Russians did not.

  12. I think Russia becoming a communist country was good and bad at the same time. It was good because they did not become communist they would have most likely have been much worse. The country would be in big trouble. But it benefitted people by helping people live a little better. Although it may not have worked all the way, it still helped a little. Another benefit was health care and also lower prices on houses and clothes and some other things. S becoming communist was both benefitial and non benefitial.

  13. I think there are pros and cons to every government. The amount of each and the outcome of them is what determines if it is the right choice of government or not. I think when it came to that particular time in Russia, their choice of communism and the outcome was more good than bad. Even though it was not fair to the people at all and could have gone much better, it did help Russia move forward and in some ways gain a sense of security. It also gave them opportunity. Now that their country was in a good place economically and had a good sense of nationalism (even if it was not quite for the right reasons) they could move on to greatness. Also they had better education, medical care, and equal rights for both men and women! In this case I think the good out ways the bad and it was better for Russia to become communist after World War I.

  14. I agree with Gabby and Alex. I think that a comunist government was good for Russia. And there are always pros and cons to any governement. I helpped Russia sort of revolutionize and take steps forward. If Russia wasn't a comunist country I think it would have been in a much worse place than it was. Lennen and Stalin helped push the country in the right direction with the free education and health care and everything. I think that a lot of the people benifited from all of this, they may not agreed with one person or group incontroll, but they deffinatly got more out of it.

  15. I don't think that Russia benefited from being a communist goverment. Although it did have some good like free education and women having equal rights there was a low standard of living and high censorship. Also housing was scarce, everyone was in terror, and atheism became the state religon. Overall communism didn't really benefit Russia at all.

  16. I think as a country, Russia benefitted greatly. But if you were to ask the people living therethey would tell you its hard, and not everything is great. However, if you consider what Russia was like after the war, they needed help quick. And communism seems to have been a good solution. No matter what government Russia used, there was going to be ups and downs, that happens in any government. So to say the problems were all because of communism si inaccurate.

  18. It's debatable. russia did industrialize, and they gained free education, free health care, and women gained many rights, but there were huge drawbacks. Freedom, one of the big things promised, was nearly non-existant. Secret police roamed the streets, bugged houses, and went through mail. Wages were low, and living conditions were horrible. so really, whether or not Russia benefited is debatable.
