Nationalism

How do countries today promote nationalism? Is there a right way or a wrong way to do this? How do we, specifically in the U.S., promote nationalism? Are you proud to be an American? Why or why not?

  1. Countries promote nationalism today by taking pride in different things related to the country. For instance, a country could be particularly proud of a kind of music then that will be shared through the radio or television or other ways of sharing it to promote nationalism. This can also be done with achievements like conquering new lands or reviving an economy. The wrong way to promote nationalism is to hurt people to feel better about the nation. Hitler did this and it turned out in genocide. The right way of promoting nationalism is to be happy for good things or at least thing that have not hurt anybody. The united states promotes nationalism by being proud of the talented people from our country and our freedom. I am proud to be an American for some reasons and not proud for others. One reason i am proud to be an American is because we are a free country and not everyone has that privilege although theoretically, everyone has the right to be free. However, I am also not proud in some ways because of all of the wars we have partaken in and how many people died for no good reason. Some wars are worth fighting for but some wars that the United states has fought in or even initiated have not been worth the costs. Also some leaders in the U.S.A. have made some decisions without thinking them through first like giving weapons to people who would later fight us with them. Overall, America has done both good and bad things but many who live here have a very strong sense of nationalism and there are some good reasons for that.

  2. Countries in this day and age promote nationalism in very different ways than they used to. People from a certain country take pride in the things that their country has which other countries don't, such as certain resources, industries, and sports. An example for sports would be how Americans share a common bond through loving Baseball and Football, while people in Europe might feel more of a bond through soccer.
I do think that there is a right and wrong way to promote nationalism. The right ways would be through some of the examples I already stated, things that are good for the country and do not cause any harm, the wrong ways, however, would be through wars or other things that could hurt different countries.
I can be both proud and not proud to be an American at times for many reasons. Im proud when I hear about how our country has helped other less fortunate places, or dealt with important issues properly. On the other hand, when I hear about things like shootings taking place in the US, or wars we are a part of that have killed thousands of innocent people I feel a little ashamed as if i was part of it. However, I believe that the good things in America weigh out the bad and overall we have a very strong sense of good nationalism.

  3. One way a country can promote nationalism is by just giving motivational speeches. Other countries like the U.S. have certain days that can spread nationalism such as independence day, memorial day, veteran's day ect. because they "bring us together" .When nationalism is spread in a harmful way, then that would be the wrong way to do it. Nationalism should be spread without hurting anyone in any way. Speeches and celebrations are the best way to do just that. I am proud to be an American, but at the same time I am not proud. Looking at America's history many innocent lives have been lost. Even when watching the news there always has to be a tragedy about a murder or robbery. Hearing all of this makes me cringe at the fact that this happens in our country everyday. Not everything about the U.S. is bad. We have helped many poor countries and have many charities, which makes me proud to be American

  4. Giving speeches that motivate people can promote nationalism. Countries like the U.S. have special holidays that promote nationalism too. Harming people and threatning people is the wrong way to do it. Many people will not support it and it will fall apart. Memorial day and independance day are a couple of days that help spread nationalism. I also am proud to be an american

  5. Most countries today promote their nationalism by sports. People are crazy about there national teams during the world cup, seeing your country win sparks an uprising of nationalism. Though South Africa didnt go far in the 2010 world cup it promoted lots of nationalism for the world cup being hosted in their country. Or conutries will have a national holiday like independence day, or memorial day etc. Countries like to promote their nationalism in different ways and theirs nothing wrong with that, but conquering other lands for nationalism is a wrong way. Adolf Hitler used nationalism in a very bad way. He used fear to control people if u didnt support the nazis than you are a betrayer. People out of fear in Germany acted like they had pride in their country when really they were just ashamed of what they had done.

Yes I am proud to be an American, if it werent for us we'd be spaeking German right now. Our country has helped natural disasters and international problems all over the globe.

  6. Countries today promote nationalism in many different ways. It can range from national holidays and parades to simple sports championships. There is not right or wrong way to promote nationalism in ones country so long as it actually works and I believe as long as it doesn't not punish an innocent person or animal. In the US we usually stick to national holidays, sports and parades to promote nationalism. I am very proud to be and American but I also am proud to be other nationalities as well. Many nations in the world to day are excellent at promoting nationalism throughout their country and doing it in a fair and great way.

  7. Most countries use sports and win fights to promote nationalism. They could also give modivational speeches like Vicky had said. Modivational speechs just like Martin Luther King Jr. There are are right ways and wrong ways to do this. Rights ways woyuld be like playing sports and have a fun rivalry. Wrong ways would be things like getting in fights or war just for nationalism, because if you do fight and you loose than it hurts you're nationalism, but if you win that it helps it. You just don't want to take the chance. We as the US permote nationalism by sporting events and holidays.
Yes,I'm proud to be an American. Because I'm an American I know I always know I'll have a say in the government and I know I'm free. And I have people fighting to keep me(and everyone else) safe.

  8. Different countries promote nationalism in their own ways. A common way countries do this is through sports, holiday's, motivational speeches and parades. I don't think that there is a right and a wrong way, but there are better ways than others. As long as nobody gets hurt and doesn't get unruly, promoting your country's nationalism is a great way to show that your proud to be part of your country. In the U.S the most noticed ways we promote nationalism is by having holiday's remembering important people that have helped and supported our nation. We also use sports events to show that we are happy to be apart of our country. When a team that represents us as a nation (patriots,Celtics,Red Sox) wins we feel proud to be part of that society. Yes, i am proud to be American because i'm proud to know that so many people fight for our nation, and that we are free people and can have our own opinions. Many countries aren't as free as we are, and i'm glad that i can have a say in something i believe in and that can make a change in our country.

  9. Countries promote nationalism in many different ways. For example music, many different kinda of sports or holidays. There is not exactly a right or wrong way to promote nationalism. As long people don't people don't do anything bad to themselves or any other person or thing. In the U.S, we tend to promote nationalism by having a special holiday, or watching a big Football game or even watching the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. Another great example of how the United States promotes nationalism would be our National Anthem. Before any big sports event someone sings the Anthem. Also, I am proud to be an American. Because I believe that in America almost anything can happen. Also, because since I am an American I am free. I also have the power and the privilege to vote when i am older.

  10. Countries today promote nationalism in many different ways. Like everyone has mentioned before, countries can show their pride through sports, holidays, television programs, music, celebrities, culture, languages, food, and so much more. The United States personally promotes nationalism in all of those ways. I do not believe that there is a right or wrong way to show one's pride in their country. Although in some cases, a country might be known for something bad that they had done in the past but this might not have been on purpose.

I personally am proud to be an American. I am proud to be an American because of all the accomplishments we have made as a whole. I am proud that I will be able to vote when I am 18 and have a right to show my opinion towards certain things. I am also proud to be an American knowing that I live in a free country.

  11. There are many ways today's people show their nationalism. Many nations have taken particular interest in sports, like Japan favors baseball, and America favors football. There are some wrong ways to show nationalism in your country, like discriminating against someone because they're not from your country or speak your language.
I'm not quite sure i'm proud to be an American. I've seen much in the world for a fourteen year old girl, and I've seen what America can do, and it's not alwyas pretty. I know that this is the land i grew up in... But i also have spent a good amount of my life outside America. And even in America, not everyone is equal. People still don't get rights or jobs because of their race, gender, and/or sexuality, and many other factors. I know America is supposed to be the land of equality for all, but I don't know if i'm proud to be an American because i haven't seen much of America hold true to that promise.

  12. many countries promote nationalism in different ways many countries are in love with soccer so when ever there soccer team wins a big game or the world cup people go crazy and become proud of their nation. A good president that inspires people will also be proud of their nation. Bad ways to promote nationalism are blaming every thing wrong with the country on people that had nothing to do with it. In the United States we promote nationalism with holidays and sports. I am proud to be an American because although there many flaws of this country it could be worse.

  13. Today, Countries try to promote nationalism through things that average people can relate to. For example many countries put alot of emphasis in there sports teams, because when they win the citizins of that country feel proud to live there. Some countries use holidays to help the current citizens to be thankful of past generations who helped serve for their country. Here in the U.S. We have sport teams that only play in our own country that way if one team loses against another, the U.S. still wins. We also publicly brag about our advances in science and other affairs in order to make Americans feel lucky that they live in this country.

  14. Countries today promote nationalism by celebrating independance day, having an national anthem, supporting the military and sports team in the olympics. The wrong way to promote nationalism is to force your views on another country and others. The US spacifically promotes nationalism by singing the anthem before every sports event, firewortk displays on july 4 to signify independance, and after 9/11 America really came together as a country and supported one another. I am prond to be an American because compared to other countries we have many more rights and freedom.

  16. Countries promote different ways of nationalism than was earlier demonstrated. Nowadays, countries such as America promotes nationalism by taking pride in their own customs, such as their holidays or their home teams (Massachusetts favors the Red Sox, America favors The 4th of July). Back when nationalism was orignally being introduced, the ways that countries introduced nationalism was by trying to take over other countries and teach them the ways of their own, because that was the way they had learned about their countries and thought everyone should do exactly the same. Nationalism today is different, because all of the countries are run differently are accept that they are different; though different holidays from around the world are marked on calendars we celbrate the ones we know, we take our customs the way they are and we are proud to have them and be Americans.

I am proud to be an American because America is the only place I have ever lived in and it was the place I was born, and it is overall a unique thing that we are one country but America different states, whereas a continent has several different countries and are divided between the way that they land and who they are ruled by. I like being where I am and I like being an American because that is who I am and I am proud of my country, because I like who we are.

  18. Countries promote nationalism by finding ways to celebrate things the country has achieved or by finding things that the citizens have in common. For example, if a country did something important like providing aid to a country that had just suffered a disaster or winning a war, the government could remind people of this to make them think of the country in a better way. Alternatively, if there was some common interest that many of the citizens of the country had, the government could do something to make it more important or a national favorite or something else similar. The only wrong way to promote nationalism would be to try to emphasize something the country had done that was not actually good, or to make something up to celebrate about the country. In the U.S., nationalism is promoted by celebrating patriotic holidays and other "American" events.

Personally, I am only proud to be an American some of the time. Everyone in the U.S. is free and has equal rights (at least in theory), and the U.S. does many good things. However, whenever people (especially politicians) are being particularly stupid about some issue, or someone has committed some horrendous crime, then I do not feel particularly proud to be an American.

  19. countrys promote nationilism by doing many different things. some ways are by celebrating the fourth of July, indepedance day, veterans day and etc. I am proud to be an American because Americans have so much freedom.everybody has equal rights and gets treeated the same.t doesn't matter what race you are or what religions you follow.

  20. countrys do different things to promote nationalism. Many countrys have their own independence days to celebrate the freedom their country has. Also, countrys promote it by showing the world theyre better then others. like the olympics, if your country wins more gold medals then anyother one then you can feel proud in that you have the best athelets in your country. America promotes nationalism by having an independence day and celebrating those who lost their lives in war. There are times when im proud to be a american and other times im not. like when america helped Haiti it made me proud that we helped another country, but when we unnecesarily attack other countrys, not so much.

  21. Countries today show nationalism in many ways. One of the main ways that i think countries show there nationalism is through sports. Sports and teams are one of the biggest national past times in America. Another big way of showing nationalism in our country and other countries is by are music choices. Music is a big part of my life and i know for a fact it is a big part of many other peoples lives. There are many other ways that we express and show are nationalism but those are just a few that stand out to me.
