European Rule of Africa

You spent a week or so examining the topic of imperialism, specifically the European takeover of Africa. Based on what you've read and watched and considering the state of Africa today, do you think Africa benefitted at all from European influence? In your response, state a few reasons why.

  1. In my opinion, overall Africa did not benefit from European influence. While new technology and culture were introduced by Europeans, many countries didn't treat the natives properly. Because of the Europeans, many natives were killed and enslaved, and countries' resources were used up.

  2. i dont think that africa benifieted benifieted from european rule because overall the entire people suffered because of the cruel oppression of slavery they endured with the europenas as there rulers. the reasources were taken also by the europeans and they used them to make a profit were the africans were just stolen from. but they were helped a little from the new technologies and cultures the europeans brought in.

  3. I believe in a way Africa benefited from the Europeans takeover. Africans were introduced to new technology of the time period. But mostly Africa's rich culture was diminished and the people shamed. European's took advantage of Africa's rich resources and vast land. Today Africa is rebelling against itself and is in political chaos. Therefore Africa some what benefited from Europe's takeover but mostly did not.

  4. That's a difficult question because in the end they ended up the same as they were in the beginning. But they did mondernize Africa and bring they up to date on things such as weapons and technology. But they also enslaved a lot of people and killed a lot of people. Over all I don't think Africa could be where it is today if it wasn't for the Europeans.

  5. I think it goes both ways. At one point, Europe was helping Africa, and they had been doing well under their rule, in a way. Most of the rest of the time that Europe was in Africa, they were doing it harm and using their resources for irrelevant reasons, as well as hurting and using the Africans as slaves. As well, several of the leaders had been lying about making the country a better place to live. Overall, I don't really know if they had at the time. In the long run, Africa hasn't really benefited by Europe much.

  6. I think that Africa benefited from European imperialism. First of all, before Europe took over most of Africa, it was not on the map. If Europe had not come in, it may still be uncharted land and therefore there would be nobody to help with poverty and diseases in Africa. Second of all, There are many resources in Africa that have helped the economies of the world that would not have been harnessed without European technology. Also, if it had not been discovered, then later on countries would want it and there would be much more destruction because of the more modern weapons that would have been used. I am not saying that the actions that some countries or people, like King Leopold or Britain, did the right thing by exploiting the countries people and resources. However, the world has profited and gained much from Africa that we would not have otherwise.

  7. Yes, i do think that Africa benefited from Europe's imperialism. For one thing, with the help of Europe Africa was able to sell and trade their good natural resources and other products that they had. And also if Europe had not discover Africa it would they would not have been even gain somewhat money and also because if they had not discovered it there would still probably be a lot of diseases and even poverty. And for example even though King Leopold II was not exactly the nicest person ever he still made Africa famous and since then it was known to many people. Also like i said before Europe helped diseases by bringing in medicine they also taught the Africans Christianity. And from all of that the world has gained a lot from Africa itself.

  8. I think they didn't benefit from European influence, they took al the resources, took away their culture, and harmed many Africans. They also ensalved many people, but they were introduced new technology

  9. The only way I could see how the African's benefited from European influence is from all the technology they recieved. Even that though didnt help everyone. It only helped Ethiopia fend off Italy. The natives were treated horribly and most of Africa was stripped of its natural resources with out much of the profit going to help the continent. So all in all I dont think Africa benfited from European influence.

  10. I think Africa did benefit from European Imperialism. I think that because Europe helped Africa culturally. Europe helped Africa gain money buy selling goods. However Europeans did take advantage of Africa's resources. This made them do well which really isn't fair. I don't think Africa benefited much from Europe though.

  11. I don't think that Africa benefitted at all from European rule. They held a dictatorship position while they ruled and ruin most f thier resouces. Europe left Africa in a worse condition then when they came and to this day they haven't been able to recover and have a stable goverment.

  12. I do think that Africa benefitted from European imperialism a little bit for a couple of reasons. First, many countries became more modernized and received newer and more helpful technology from the European countries that were controlling them. Secondly, under the rule of the European countries, many of the Africans felt a strong feeling of Nationalism for their country for the first time. Even if that wasn't the case for all of the countries, it did happen and it had a huge effect on the ones that did experience it.

  13. I think that the African's did and did not benefit from European imperialism. They did because it helped introduce them to better technology and medicines. It also introduced them to better military tactics and different types of governments and religions. However, I also say it was a bad thing because many African countries had to go through long periods of slavery, great poverty, and extreme violence.

  14. I think that Africa both benefitted and didn't, but didn't benefit in a lot more way then benefitting. The only thing that the Africans benefitted from was the new technology. Other than that, they did not benefit. Europeans used a lot of violence in general, and sometimes for no reason at all, and also put the Africans through slavery which was not necessary. The Europeans changed the African's way of life including their religion and culture. The African's were changed in many ways and I believe it was in a bad way.

  15. I really don't think Africa benefitted from Euorope at all. Europe was not able to control Africa well, and treated the people well. Even the technology the Europeans brought to Africa is being used in ways that defenatly detract from the continents well being. For example the Guns that the Europeans introduced to the Africans, are now feeding civil wars in Africa. I feel that if Europe left Africa alone, Africa would have eventually modernized. Perhaps slower, but it would not be forced and the development would be more natural.

  16. I don't think Africa benefited from European rule. Although the European rule helped Africa modernize, it left it in the same state as it was before they came, with the addition of many people dead. The way the Europeans ruled Africa was by violence, and fear. The new technology did help the Africans with trading, and helping cure diseases, but they also took away their culture, and greatly depleted their natural resources. If Europe hadn't taken over Africa, the modernization would have been slower, but would have been less cause and affect later.
